Capacity and Variability Analysis of the IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol

چکیده
Packet error in the IEEE 802.11 network is one source of performance degradation and its variability. Most of the previous works study how collision avoidance and hidden terminals affect 802.11 performance metrics, such as probability of a collision and saturation throughput. In this paper we focus on the effect of packet errors on capacity and variability of the 802.11 MAC protocol. We develope a new analytical model, called pe-Model, by extending the existing model (Tay and Chua’s model) to incorporate packet error probability pe. With pe-Model, we successfully analyze capacity and variability of the 802.11 MAC protocol. The variability analysis shows that increasing packet error probability by pe has more effect on saturation throughput, than adding 0:5W pe stations, where W is the minimum contention window size, We also show the numerical validation of pe-Model with 802.11 MAC-level simulator.

متن کاملA Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks
Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
متن کاملIEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN: Capacity Analysis and Protocol Enhancement
In WLAN the medium access control (MAC) protocol is the main element for determining the efficiency in sharing the limited communication bandwidth of the wireless channel. This paper focuses on the efficiency of the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless LANs. Specifically, we derive an analytical formula for the protocol capacity [Kur 84]. From this analysis we found i) the theoretical upper bound ...
متن کاملModeling an Energy-Efficient MAC Layer Protocol
In wireless adhoc networks, channel and energy capacities are scarce resources. In our previous work we proposed BLAM, a new energy aware MAC layer enhancement for the IEEE 802.11 protocol to save the energy and channel capacity wasted in collisions. In this paper we introduce a collision model to analytically compare BLAM to the IEEE 802.11. Using this model we provide worst-case and best-case...
متن کاملCooperative MAC Protocol based on TXOP and Block ACK in IEEE 802.11e WLANs
The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol cannot support quality of service (QoS) requirements. In order to provide QoS in the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol, the IEEE 802.11e has been standardized. These standards provide multiple transmission rates, which can be changed dynamically according to the channel condition. When using multiple transmission rates, the capacity of wireless LAN improves, but the performa...
